Gentoo lost and Debian losing to CentOS

Published on August 1st, 2010

If Linux distributions were stocks and you an investor you wish you’d have invested in CentOS. Time to sell what’s left and get yourself some steady and stable CentOS stocks, well at least according to Google Insights.

Unfortunately google insight monitors interest from search terms not necessarily users or downloads of certain distros.

If how ever one looks at http://distrowatch.com/ which monitors actual distro downloads you will see that CentOS is only in position 15 and Ubuntu, Fedora and Mint fill the 1,2 and 3 spots respectively.

I would hazard a guess that the google insights graphs are more an indication as the the frustration or difficulty users experience with a certain distro and thus requiring more searches to fix things. IN this case the the reduction in searches for the major distros would indicate they are getting easier to use and more fully featured, especially see as their user bases are much larger.

    Good point Darren.

Here's another thing to consider, most Gentoo users have run almost every single flavor of Linux, and eventually ended up at destination Gentoo, for a reason. Stability and Performance.

Most Centos users can't install Gentoo (ROFL)
