Installing Webmin on CentOS 5.5 Tutorial

Webmincentos This brief yet effective tutorial will instruct you on how to install CentOS 5.5 with Webmin, a web-based interface for system administration for Linux

The assumption for this CentOS 5.5 Webmin tutorial is that you are running as root and have a basic understanding of the software required but if you follow this tutorial you should be able to complete the task successfully.

Learn more about Webmin: http://www.webmin.com/

Preliminary Note:

I am using a CentOS 5.5 32bit server in this tutorial:

* centos01.how2centos.com (IP 10.0.0.3)

Let’s begin by installing the GPG key with which the packages are signed

# rpm --import http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc

Add the Webmin YUM Repository

# cat > /etc/yum.repos.d/webmin.repo << EOF
[Webmin]
name=Webmin Distribution Neutral
baseurl=http://download.webmin.com/download/yum
enabled=1
EOF

or if you prefer using an editor

# vi /etc/yum.repos.d/webmin.repo

1
2
3
4
[Webmin]
name=Webmin Distribution Neutral
baseurl=http://download.webmin.com/download/yum
enabled=1

Now to install Webmin

# yum install webmin

Finally browse to your machine on port 10000

    Very useful. I did have to do some more searching to work out how to open up port 10000 – this link was good for that: http://controlpanelblog.com/webmin/configuring-your-firewall-for-webmin.html. Thank you!

    This did not work: # rpm –import http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc
    > error: http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc: import read failed(0).

    workaround
    cd /tmp
    wget http://www.webmin.com/jcameron-key.asc
    rpm –import jcameron-key.asc

    Minor detail but for newbs like me I almost missed it: The end of the install will provide you with the login path to webmin.  I was trying to access it by IP address and that would not work.

    Finally browse to your machine on port 10000

    http://centos01.how2centos.com:10000 (I was replaceing with IP and did not work)

    Then saw the path provided by setup and that worked.  Anyone know how to edit a config file that allows for login by IP or by hostname?

    I install webmin
    While trying to retrieve the URL:
    http://192.168.1.10000/

    You’re missing part of your IP address and it’s port 10000
